Mazda MX-5 Cup
As of the 2019 season the I.L. Motorsport Racing team will also participate in the new Mazda MX-5 Cup. This cup will race with the 2019 MX-5 Roadster with 2.0l 4 cilinder engine with 184HP and 205Nm as part of the Super Car Challenge organisation. The new car is expected to be about 10 seconds per lap faster at the circuit of Zandvoort.
For the team this will be a new step in motor racing. In the MaX5 cup with the first-generation MX-5 the team has always been a front runner. With reigning and two-time MaX5 cup champion András Király in the new car and with 11 seasons of experience for the team in the MaX5 cup it is expected that the team will be a front runner here too.
The championship will consist of 6 high-level events at legendary tracks like Spa Francorchamps, Zandvoort, Zolder and Assen and will be televised in The Netherlands in the RTL GP program. Most iconic event will be the Jumbo Racedagen driven by Max Verstappen at which more than 100.000 spectators are expected.
Following the example of the successful MX-5 racing series in Japan, Usa and England, the MAX5 racing championship (www.max5racing.nl) was founded in 2008 as part of the Dutch DNRT organisation. This race series offers a perfect introduction into the world of motorsport. It is one of major series within the DNRT organisation and within Dutch motorsport.
I.L.Motorsport is very successfully involved from the start of the series in 2008. Drivers championships have been obtained in 2009, 2014, 2017 and 2018 with second places in all other years. The team championship has been obtained in 2014 and 2018, the years we entered a car in this separate championship. Since 2011 we run three race cars, one race car that can be hired by anyone who has a valid circuit racing license.
Only MX-5 NA 1.6 (construction year 1989 – 1993) are permitted for racing, approx. 130HP in race trim. The minimum weight including driver is 960 kg. In order to limit cost and ensure the principle of equal opportunities, only small changes to the cars are permitted. The Dutch regulations comply in great part with the British regulations. This allows drivers to compete in the UK and measure themselves with British drivers and cars competing at circuits such as: Zandvoort, Assen, Zolder and Spa Franchorchamps.
Requirements for the car:
- Roll cage
- Racing seat and racing belt
- Gaz coilover shocks
- HAWK racing brakepads
- Max5 airfilter system
- JR racing wheels with Interstate DNRT Race tires
- Fire extinguisher
- Move battery to centre of the boot
- Remove interior (not the dashboard)
Recommended changes to car:
- Aluminium radiator
- Fibreglass headlight cover with air inlet
- Race exhaust (sound volume in accordance with regulations)
- Skimmed cilinderhead

In the Dutch MaX5 series races are mostly sprint races, but a season also includes a semi-endurance race. With a separate championship for teams and because there are multiple races during a race day it is possible to share a car with two or more drivers.
MaX5 allows for affordable racing, close battles and relaxed atmosphere in the paddock. That is what makes this series so attractive – not only for drivers, but also for spectators.
